The term Buddha means “Awakened”. To fully comprehend the Four Noble Truths* and as to arise from the slumbers of ignorance is called Buddha. To not only comprehend but also to expound the doctrine and enlighten others, is called Samma-Sam-buddha “Fully Enlightened One”. To be achieved, it needs intensive spiritual exercises and development of the qualities of generosity, of discipline, of renunciation, of wisdom, of energy, of endurance, of truthfulness, of determination, of benevolence and of perfect equanimity.

*In short form, the four truths are dukkha "unsatisfactoriness", samudaya "arising", nirodha "cessation", and marga, the path leading to cessation.
